The Art of Play: Play as a Behavior and Building Playful Relationships

Morning Session: “Play is a Behavior: Understanding and Leveraging Your Dog’s Natural Instincts”

Working Spots are limited to 10 teams. You will get at least 3 sessions with your dog in individual or group settings including a 10 minute coaching session. You’ll also get to audit the rest of the day. If you choose the morning session, you’ll discover how to make play sessions more engaging and enjoyable for your dog by understanding their natural instincts!

In this session, you will learn:

  • The components of the predatory motor pattern and how they manifest in different breeds influencing your dog’s play behavior.
  • Techniques to identify your dog’s play preferences and tailor activities to their natural inclinations.
  • How to use a variety of toys and food, including a food and toy hierarchy to maximize engagement and enjoyment.

You’ll come away with knowledge and tools to make play a vital part of your dog’s life. Learn how to create meaningful play experiences that cater to your dog’s unique personality and instincts.

Working spot: $110 members/$130 non-members (includes auditing afternoon session).
Audit spot half day: $25 members/$45 non-members

Afternoon Session:”Playful Relationship: how to use play to improve your relationship and engagement” 

Working Spots are limited to 10 teams for the afternoon session. You will get 3 sessions with your dog in individual or group settings including a 10 minute coaching session. You’ll also get to audit the morning session. If you choose the afternoon session, you’ll learn how to loosen up (the human and dog) and get creative with play.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to relax and soften your movement and become the playful character your dog knows you can be.
  • How to bring fun to a serious dog or build a playful spirit in your dog that may seem disinterested or low drive/arousal.
  • How to use a variety of toys and food, including a food and toy hierarchy to maximize engagement and enjoyment.

The afternoon is about learning how to become playful for yourself and for our dogs.

Working spot: $100 members/$130 non-members (includes auditing morning session).
Audit spot half day: $25 members/$45 non-members
Audit spot full day: $40 members/$60 non-members

About Crystal Wing: Crystal has been training dogs since 2006 and traveled the nation learning and competing in various protection sports.  She is a certified trial helper through GSDCA for IGP and training decoy for mondioring. Through extensive traveling and training she has titled several different dogs in several different protection sports, dock diving, agility, weight pull and rally. She is training her newest K9 for human remains detection. Crystal is the Training Director for the Evolution Working Dog Club located in St. Louis, Mo. Crystal is the principal at CB K9 Training and is the training director at Evolution Working Dog Club in Missouri. Crystal is also a co-host of the popular K9 Detection Collaborative podcast, which explores all things detection dog, from scent sport to search and rescue and beyond, and has led several workshops and webinars for the Fenzi Dog Sports Academy. She recently retired from teaching high school art to become a full-time dog trainer and instructor.
