Basic Training class information
Orientation session:
Before the first week of class, you will be asked to watch a prerecorded video orientation and complete a questionnaire about you and your dog and your goals for the class. Please be sure to view the video and complete and return the questionnaire by the given deadline. You will also receive a clicker in the mail a few days before your first class.
You will need the following training equipment:
- Collar: All dogs must be wearing a collar. Approved varieties of collars are buckle, limited-slip, Martingale, or a head halter such as a Gentle Leader. In keeping with TCOTC’s positive training philosophy, prong collars, choke chains, and e-collars are not permitted. Harnesses are not allowed in the ring unless medically necessary.
- Leash: Leashes should be about 6 feet in length and non-retractable
- Treats: Something small, soft and tasty that your dog enjoys.
- Treat Pouch: Something to hold your treats.
- Clicker
All these items are available for purchase from our store.
Clothing:
Please wear comfortable clothing and rubber-soled shoes. Sandals must have a back strap. You will need freedom of movement for standing, sitting, crouching, jogging, etc.
Miscellaneous Information:
- The purpose of this class is to teach you to train your own dog. You should expect to spend at least 15 minutes each day training your dog outside of class. Attendance at all sessions is important. If you need to miss a class, missed homework will be e-mailed to you.
- Your dog should be comfortable wearing a collar and having a leash attached. Acquaint your dog to these before the start of Week 1 of your class.
- Dogs who are in season or sick should not come to the club. Attend class without your dog and train your dog at home. Postpone training sick dogs until they are well.
