Registration

Level 1

Pre-registration is required as classes often fill up several weeks in advance of the start date. Completed Level 1 applications accompanied by the $95 class fee plus membership dues may be mailed to the address in the top right-hand corner of the application form, or dropped off at the main desk at TCOTC. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, up to a maximum of 15 for each class, and will be confirmed by mail. Please do not assume you are enrolled unless you have received verification. You may download a form located at the bottom of this page.

All other classes

Sign-up sheets are available at TCOTC's main desk shortly before the start dates for new class sessions, and a new-member application form can be requested for those joining TCOTC at the advanced training levels. Class sizes are limited, and you must be a current club member. For those who have not completed TCOTC's Level 1 class please determine the class you wish to join and contact the club on that day to set up an appointment with the lead instructor. (612-379-1332) The lead instructor (or their designee) will contact you and set up a date for an evaluation. This is a simple assessment tool to let the instructor place you in an appropriate class. You will be asked to heel your dog, use verbal commands, demonstrate any hand signals you use and tell about your dog's current obedience work. We do not expect any dog or handler to be perfect so please relax and do your best so that we can place in a class where you both will be comfortable and can continue to train to your own goals.

Level 1:

This positive method will enable you to teach your dog good dog manners and learn how to use everyday resources that your dog values for rewards. By using a marker (either a mechanical clicker or single syllable word) your dog will quickly learn to give you good behaviors to earn a reward of praise, petting, playing with you, or their daily meals (food). Behaviors taught in class will be getting your dog's attention, having your dog walk calmly beside you, and also basic obedience skills of sit, down, come and stay. The training skills introduced will be how to identify and get desired dog behaviors, and how to name or cue a behavior. This class is suitable for puppies as young as 7 weeks of age as well as older dogs without previous formal training. The class lasts one hour per week for 9 weeks. You will receive a 6-foot leash and a limited slip collar.

Level 2 and 3:

For graduates of Level 1 classes. These include the introduction of off-leash heeling and techniques for obtaining better control on all exercises previously learned. These courses run one hour per week for 9 weeks. Dogs new to our program should be evaluated to determine correct class level.

Advanced Classes:

For graduates of Level 3. Advanced training includes perfection of off-leash control in all excercises and instruction for competition novice obedience exercises. One hour per week for 9 weeks. Prior instructor approval is required before admission to classes.

Advanced/Open:

Dogs participating must have at least one leg toward their novice title.  Dog/handler teams will be developing and refining the open and utility exercises.  This is not run throughs.  Instructor: Patty Fulton
