Flyball Classes

The Flyball I class requires the dog to be able to do an on-leash sit or down stay for 30 seconds, a dead ball retrieve, and a recall in the presence of other dogs. A limited number of qualifying students will then be admitted to the class. We will also visit a Flyball Tournament to learn more. Download Flyball I Application here (2 pages).

Flyball FAQs

What is Flyball?

Flyball is a relay race in which 2 Flyball teams compete against each other. A Flyball team consists of 4 main dogs and their handlers, a boxloader, and one or two alternate dogs and handlers. A dog from each team races over a series of 4 hurdles, steps on a Flyball box, catches a tennis ball that flies out of the box, and returns with the ball over the 4 hurdles and across the start/finish line. The race is won by the first team to have all 4 dogs successfully complete their runs.

Who can participate in Flyball?

Flyball is an exciting sport enjoyed by dogs, handlers and spectators alike. It is open to all dogs – both purebred and mixed breeds. Human participants need to be a TCOTC club member in good standing. Dogs need to be in good physical condition with obedience skills who are well-socialized to people and other dogs.

How do my dog and I learn how to play Flyball?

The best way to learn Flyball is to take the Introduction to Flyball class offered at TCOTC. This class will teach you and your dog the fundamentals of Flyball. The class is offered 2 times a year and consists of 7 sessions for $60.00.

Graduates of our Introduction to Flyball class may choose to continue perfecting their flyball skills in our Level 2 Flyball class. The class is offered 2 times a year and consists of 6 sessions for $30.00.

Once my dog and I have taken the Flyball classes, then what?

You can join our transition dogs and start practicing with other dogs who are at a similar level of ability.

How do my dog and I compete in Flyball?

There are 6 Flyball tournaments in the Metro area throughout the year (including TCOTC'S). Some Flyball team members also compete at out-of-town tournaments in Cedar Rapids, Omaha, Winnipeg, and Thunder Bay.
