Reactive Rovers
2nd Class time added! Now at 8:30 am and 10 am on Fridays!
Class Description: Do you hate taking your dog for walks because he goes nuts when he sees other dogs?
A very common behavior issue for our modern dogs is called “barrier frustration” or “leash reactivity”. This class is for dogs who are reactive (bark/lunge) to stimuli in their environment. Sometimes it is only when they are restrained – on leash, in a car, behind a fence – and the problem disappears when they are free. Sometimes it is a more universal problem. Sometimes we are afraid to test it!
In class we will work mostly with reactivity to other dogs, but the same methods apply to reactivity to joggers, bicycles, cars, etc. We will use the scientific principles of desensitization and counter conditioning to not just suppress behavior, but actually change your dog's emotional reaction to things that now make him act crazy. We'll also teach the dogs some more desirable behaviors to engage in when he sees exciting things.
The program will include two parts: a 1-1/2 hour lecture class for humans (without dogs) and six small group classes with other “reactive rovers” (typically four dogs and two instructors) for a total of seven weeks. Due to the special nature of this course, students should complete the Behavior Class questionnaire prior to being accepted into class.
This is NOT a class for dogs who are known to be frankly aggressive and have bitten either people or other dogs. If you have such a dog, or for other questions contact instructor Julie Humiston.
Class Fee: $140 + membership dues. After taking the full program students may repeat the group classes only at a reduced cost ($120).
Registration process: Club membership is required to attend classes at TCOTC. Fill out a membership application if you are not already a member. Fill out this application and send it with the completed Behavior Class questionnaire, and a check made out to TCOTC to the address on the application, or bring it to the front desk at TCOTC. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration will be confirmed by phone or email. Please do not assume you are enrolled unless you have received verification. Our classes fill in advance and walk-ins will not be accepted.
